What to Pack for a Pickleball Tournament (So You Don't Look Like a Rookie)

What to Pack for a Pickleball Tournament (So You Don't Look Like a Rookie)

Okay. So you signed up for a tournament. Look at you, all official and bracketed and everything. First things first: congratulations, you are now a Tournament Person, which means your packing list just got exponentially more complicated than "paddle, water, vibes." Buckle up.

The Paddles (Plural. Always Plural.)

You will bring at least three paddles. You will use one of them. The other two are emotional support paddles — one is "just in case this one feels weird today" and the other you haven't used since April but you *love* the way it looks in your bag. This is not optional. This is Tournament Law.

A Cooler That's 90% Snacks, 10% Actual Hydration

Sure, bring water. Bring electrolytes. But let's be honest with each other: the real MVP of your cooler is going to be the string cheese, the too-warm grapes, and whatever your doubles partner brought that you're going to eat off her like a golden retriever between games. Nobody plans their nutrition at a tournament. You just graze like a very competitive goat.

Sunscreen You Will Apply Once, at 7am, and Never Again

You know you should reapply. You know it. And yet by 2pm you look like a rotisserie chicken who also plays a mean third shot drop. Bring the sunscreen anyway. Future You (the one dealing with the sunburn) will at least appreciate the effort, even if she doesn't appreciate the follow-through.

A Folding Chair That Costs More Than Your First Paddle

There is no faster way to identify a Tournament Veteran than by the chair. If it reclines, has a built-in cooler, cup holders, and possibly WiFi, you are dealing with someone who has been humbled by enough concrete bleachers to invest accordingly. Get the chair. You'll thank yourself during the two-hour wait between matches that nobody warned you about.

Extra Socks, Because You Will Sweat Through the First Pair by 9:15am

This is not a suggestion, this is science.

A Backup Outfit for the "I Thought I'd Lose in Round One but Somehow I'm Still Here" Scenario

Whether it's confidence, delusion, or genuinely good pickleball, sometimes you make it further than expected and now you're playing your fourth match in the same slightly damp shirt from 8am. Pack the backup. Hope is a strategy.

Something to Say "Good Game" Through Gritted Teeth

You will lose a match you were absolutely supposed to win. Bring your composure. Or at least bring the *appearance* of composure. Everyone's watching, and nobody needs to see you toss a paddle like it personally betrayed you (even though, deep down, you know it did).

Your People

The friends, the partner, the rando you met in line for portapotties who's now cheering for you like family — bring them, keep them close, and let them hold your extra water bottle while you pretend you're not nervous.

Tournaments are chaotic, sweaty, slightly absurd little worlds of their own — and honestly, that's the fun of it. Pack smart, pack heavy, and go have the time of your life out there.

See you on the courts.
